On Thursday our connectUS On-Site Seminar came to an ending and was marked by an absolute highlight with Pascal Bornoz, Consul General of Switzerland at the Residence of the Swiss Confederation in Vancouver. Not only was the view from the residence remarkable but also the warm welcome by Pascal and all other invited participants who kindly took their time to share with us their knowledge about Waste related topics and the Canadian culture guaranteed an enriching event.
Marcel Studer, the Principal of Econ Group introduced the evening’s three speakers talking about sustainable building projects, the concept of Unbuilders and an upcycling company of chopsticks “Chopvalue”. During the evening we have learned from Numaira Obaid, Head of Engineering about Chopvalue, a company that lives the circular economy by collecting and pressing used chopsticks into value-added and beautiful products for designers, hospitality, architects and corporations. Further, Enterpreneur Adam Corneil a young and innovative so-called Unbuilder shared with us his expertise in unbuilding structures by hand and therefore separating materials on site as well as recycling them into the right depots. Considering that construction, renovation and demolition accounts to 27% of all waste in Canada, Adam’s work is increasingly becoming important to the nation’s environment. Last but not least, Kenneth Chooi a multitalented architect and owner of the Green Point Project shared with us his vision and realization of a sustainable home incorporating the biophilia design. Kenneth explained that biophilia design considers the connectivity to the nature and environment which will eventually lead to more health, environmental and economic benefits by producing little drawbacks.
As a whole, the presentations were extremely inspiring and characterized by future-oriented visionaries contributing to a better and more environmental-friendly life! At the cocktail reception the connectUS team had the opportunity to ask questions and network with knowledgeable personalities in an informal setting. Besides the interesting conversations we would also like to thank Maria Elena Bornoz-Kälin, the wife of the Consul who spoiled us with self-made and delicious culinary appetizers!
In the name of the connectUS team we would like to express our gratitude towards Pascal Bornoz for the amusing, inspiring and educative evening at the Swiss Consul Residence. What a culmination of the connectUS On-Site Seminar 2019!
